Paignton’s Tweenaway Cross junction improvement to start soon

Work on a major £4.1-million junction improvement scheme at Tweenaway Cross is due to start on Monday, September 20.

The Government-funded scheme, which is part of Torbay’s Local Transport Plan 2006 - 2011, aims to provide increased capacity to improve traffic flows through the junction and reduce congestion.

Some preparatory work has already been carried out, including demolition of properties and diversion of underground services to allow for the widening of the carriageway.

The scheme will involve widening of the existing carriageway to create extra lanes on Totnes Road, Kings Ash Road and Brixham Road on the approach to the junction. Additional islands will also be provided to improve the pedestrian crossings at the junction, as this junction is used by a large number of school children. The existing traffic signals will be replaced and the carriageway through the junction will be resurfaced. This part of the scheme will be completed in mid June 2011.

Further works will take place in the autumn of 2011 to avoid the works continuing during the busy summer period. This will include widening Totnes Road between the zoo car park and the Noah’s Ark public house.

Torbay Council will be working with the contractor to limit the disruption caused by the works, although some delays due to construction work should be expected.

Cabinet Member for Transport Cllr Chris Lewis said: "This scheme represents a major investment in one of Torbay’s busiest junctions, which will improve traffic flows and reduce congestion in this area.

"Tweenaway Cross has been in need of improvement for some time and this scheme will provide for future increases in traffic at the junction.”
