Work has begun at Paignton Sands to construct a ramp down to the beach from the promenade. This will help wheel chair users, people with push chairs and the less able to access the beach more easily, avoiding the steps.

Special beach wheel chairs will be available during the summer season, which will allow access across the beach, even on soft sand. Torbay Council also hopes to obtain grant aid to purchase roll out matting to allow conventional wheel chairs access across the beach.

Cabinet Member for Community Services, Councillor Dave Butt, said: "I am really looking forward to seeing this project completed. This is one of Torbay's most popular beaches and this new ramp will enable even more people to enjoy it much more easily.

"We want to encourage as many people as possible to make use of the fantastic facilities and attractions that are on their doorsteps and to encourage visitors to return to the Bay."

I hope those with mobility problems will not find themselves segregated to the south sands, abandoned, cut off from the tide and bursting for a leak !
The harbour toilets have been closed for years and the Esplanade-Flagship-Shoreline
toilets might be too far away.

Will they remove the sewerage outfall (which opens to the right hand side of the rocks
located under the walkway towards the harbour) at the same time?

Hmm, sand. Sand rocks. But, not when it's wet.

I take my gran in her wheelchair to the promonade quite regularly and so I like the idea of the matting across the beach so we can actually take a stroll on the beach.
