Crossways Shopping Centre, Paignton

The Crossways shopping centre has been a bone of contention for Paignton shoppers for some years, and there are no signs of an improvement.

Once a flourishing site of well over 25 shops – the centre now has under ten shops open. Walking through is like visiting a ghost town.

“It used to be okay but now look at it,” said John, a fed up shopper. “No one’s making an effort with it. It’s in desparate need of a facelift.”

I asked another local, Carol, why she thought the centre had become so delapedated.

“I don’t know, maybe it’s because it’s out of the way. It just looks so old-fashioned – it’s like a concrete block,” she said.

Crossways has faced uncertainty all year after receivers were called in because parent company Paladru Service Corporation had fallen behind with its mortgage payments and went into administration.

Rumours have been floating around about the site being knocked down for a Travelodge or apartments.

Last month, however, some of the retailers were told by letter that Crossways had been sold to Gaelic Investments Ltd Partnership, based in Edinburgh.

Apparantly since then there has been no word from Gaelic Investments.

Local media, namely the Herald Express, have attempted to speak to the company but has had no response.

They reported one retailer, who did not want to be named, as saying: "We all want to know what's happening because this is our livelihood.

"We haven't had a letter from anybody, although a few people have had one, so we don't know where to pay the rent.

"We don't know where to go from here. We'll just wait until someone knocks on the door and asks for payment.

"They haven't even talked with us. We heard someone was supposed to be here a week ago, but nobody turned up.

"The people of Paignton should be told what's going on."

Torbay Council confirmed it had not been contacted by Gaelic Investments, although it is keen to have discussions about Crossways' future.

Do you think there’s a future for Crossways?

I heard Gealic Investments Partnership were planning on turning it into a hotel and leisure complex with a mini-mall attached. Definitely needs something to happen to it!
