A Churston golfer's view on RAGS opposition to golf club development

The RAGS have had their say, and now I amongst many other Churston Golf Club members would like to have mine.

The golf course is in much need of development. Without this the club will be put in a very difficult financial position and who knows it may have to close completely.

What the RAGS don’t realise is that this small victory is very short sighted as in the future the whole course could be used for development with houses, supermarkets etc. and an area of outstanding natural beauty will be lost forever.

Do any of you readers remember "Torbay Golf and Country Club" in Paignton in the 1950s? It used to run parallel to Maidenway Road and across Lamas Lane and up to the windmill on the skyline. I believe this course had similar financial difficulties at the time but now it no longer exists and lots of new housing developments have taken its place.

Oh yes and just a few years ago did the council not have provisional thoughts about building a new golf course parallel to the ring road towards Torquay by Occombe farm?

Torbay already has a wonderful golf course to be proud of and I would like to see it prosper for many years to come. I urge the councillors in question to speak to the planning department as regards this matter. For they are by far and away the best people to advise and probably decide what should happen re. this development.

I don’t have a university education in town and country planning and I wonder if any of the RAGS do?

After hearing about RAGS this and RAGS that and their various tactics to get to councillors, I am not going to mention I am a little tired of their schemes and plans. I am also not going to mention their campaign road signs spoiling an area of outstanding natural beauty. After all they are only a group of people with an "Inflated sense of self".

Those vile RAGS have even made the Guardian newspaper now http://tinyurl.com/2f3pbg5

If you read the article it makes out that Churston Golf Club are pretty much building a massive car park in place of an area of outstanding natural beauty - NOT TRUE!!!

Plus that it will have a negative effect on Tourism??

Unfounded lies asking people not from the area to write to Nick Bye - expect these names will be added to the RAGS' dodgy 1000+ petition no doubt!

I am not a member of Churston but have played the course several times and it's beautiful. Groups like RAGS are always pretty short sighted and exercise little in common sense for the greater good of an area.
