My dad used to subject me and my sister to some "choice" music driving around in his old Datsun back in the day. Paul Young, Hall & Oates and rather unfortunately for our young ears - Chris de Burgh. I still know all the words to "Don't Pay the Ferryman" to this day :-(

One influence I'm rather more proud of though is English rock band Genesis. Their "Invisible Touch" album seemed glued to the car tape deck for one summer in the late 80s, so when they announced they'd be playing an extra gig at Torbay Leisure Centre on the early 90s "We Can't Dance" tour... I was first in the queue for tickets!

Both me and Dad went to the gig and I pestered him into getting me a tour t-shirt. Can't believe I still own it to this day as it's nearly 20 years old! I think it's about to disintegrate but I still dust it off occasionally for Wear Your Old Band T-Shirt To Work Day - the brain child of 6music's Steve Lurpack.

You might be able to see on one of the photos that Torbay Leisure Centre was not actually on the venue list on the back of the t-shirt but I think this was because it was an added date for Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks et al. and not on the original tour list?

The gig was fantastic and I'll always remember sitting on my dad's shoulders watching Collins and Chester Thompson busting my gut (plus the rest of the audience's) with one of their infamous drum duets!

I've managed to find all the British venues they performed at in 1992 (that was the culmination of a round the world tour) plus the theatre set list from this excellent Genesis forum:

Finally an apology. Due to being rather vertically challenged at the time I had to sit on my dad's shoulders if I wanted to see any of the gig but it became pretty uncomfortable after a while and I started to feel a bit scared I would fall off. It was also very hot in there so we went to get a quick drink towards the end of the gig and then on the way back I saw some kids standing on a radiator right at the back of the sports hall... Once again I pestered my dad to let me do this and I now had a great view of the finale!

The only problem was that we could now hardly hear the music as the radiator was in a small corridor that led into the sports hall. My poor old dad had to suffer in silence holding the door open for me to see and when he said can we go back in for the encore I said I was fine where I was!!! Sorry Dad.
