‘Tis the season to propose…
-
Oldway Mansion.
Most know that June and July are the most popular months to hold a wedding but how about the proposal? Apparently November and December are the months when most men will get their knees dirty!
Presuming all goes according to plan the next step then is to find the all-important venue.
If you’re planning to keep it local then you’re in good company. Torbay and its surrounding areas has a variety of beautiful places to hold the big day.
Below are five of the best – some obvious, others a little less:
Feel free to add to this list with your own recommendations and experiences (both good and bad).
For a seaside location few can match the Redcliffe with its panoramic views across much of the Bay.
They have catering for up to 200 people and three attractive function rooms.
Torquay’s Kathryn Sykes had her special day at the Redcliffe and gives strong approval:
“I was very impressed with the Redcliffe, everything ran very smoothly and the staff were great. I would certainly recommend them,” she said.
“It was just a shame the sun wasn’t shining for us!”
The classic wedding venue and one of the Bay’s most beautiful and renowned buildings and gardens.
Their glorious ballroom is ideal for large parties, seating up to 200 guests. The Cecil Room, with its Victorian atmosphere is perfect for a more intimate gathering of about 40 to 50 guests.
People come from all around to experience the cliff-top setting and alfresco dining.
Berry Head Hotel has many years of experience in making that special day very, very special. Their prices are very reasonable too.
“It was certainly a dream wedding. The sun was shining and looking out to the sea holding my beautiful bride Emma, it was like we were in a movie,” said James Court, of Paignton, whose wedding was celebrated at the hotel.
“And ten out of ten to everyone at the hotel for making our day so amazing.”
The Palace Hotel, one of Paignton’s most renowned, is also an old-hand at holding wedding celebrations.
It’s prime seafront location and picturesque grounds make it a popular choice for locals and visitors.
Their dedicated wedding team will look after every single detail both in the lead up to the event and also on the day itself.
And…Kents Cavern (yes really):
How about getting married in a cave? It’s certainly different and also very much the all-weather option.
Kents Cavern offers five unique underground locations to tie the knot! For an intimate occasion of around 30 people how about the Inscription Chamber? It has high ceilings with a stone waterfall as a backdrop.
For a larger gathering (of about 100 people) then the Vestibule is the preferred choice with a stalagmite chandelier formation just inside the entrance.
You can also theme your reception. How about Gothic? Or Pirates?

I am not a fan of Paignton but my daughter managed to have a fabulous wedding day there! We used three local venues - two mentioned above and one other. All of our family congregated at The Palace Hotel, which is just beautiful and like something out of Singapore. Sitting in the restaurant, under the fans, it makes you want to order a Singapore Sling. They were really good to us there and gave us a separate dining room for the night before the wedding, with one big table so that all of my family and friends could get around it. The hotel is really not like the rest of Paignton - it has class!
We then had the ceremony at Oldway Mansion - again, much grander and elegant than you'd expect for Paignton's town registry office! It was our son-in-law's idea and what a good one. There were three rooms to choose from, depending on the number of guests. We had the smallest, it was really intimate and seated 40 guests - but felt as if we were in a stately home. Nothing ostentatious though - all tasteful! The only thing we didn't like about Oldway is the very first bit of the entrance hall that feels a bit 'council'. But once you get up to the sweeping staircase, it's stunning.
Finally, we took over The Boathouse for our reception. They don't advertise it as a wedding reception venue but they did a first-class job. The owner, Matthew, has London credentials and you could tell from the way it was executed and the quality of the food. It certainly wasn't pizzas and chips, and it was decked out beautifully. We had the venue for the whole afternoon and evening, until midnight, with fireworks off the terrace at the rear. Everyone said what a fantastic place it was. This was a winter wedding, in November, and it was really cosy, with waves crashing in the distance.
I've been to a wedding at Berry Head Hotel too, which is fantastic - they were booked up on the date my daughter wanted but even though I wanted her to switch the date to get this hotel venue, I'm pleased that we went with the plan she eventually came up with.
