HI THERE
As Paignton's population grew, it merged with the coastal villages of Goodrington and Preston. The town had its own urban district council until 1968, when the creation of Torbay Council led to a single body covering Torquay, Paignton and Brixham. The unitary authority formed in 1998 now handles all local government for Torbay, which has its own directly elected mayor.

ReportInteresting info Rocky Sands. Do either of you think it's important to have the collective name Torbay? Would you ever say to someone: "I come from Torbay" as opposed to Paignton, Torquay or Brixham?

Do you come from "Torbay?" The debate is already in full flow on Twitter!
Abi from Paignton (aka @krazypinkminx) said: "If I think they wouldn't know Paignton, LOL everyone knows Torquay but not necessarily Paignton."
Elliot Massey (otherwise known as @embrixde) added: "If I were in another part of the country (ie, not in Devon, Somerset or Cornwall), then I'd say Torbay." :)

I always say I come from Paignton and it's surprising how many people know it. A lot of people have been on holiday here!
