Torbay’s new kerbside recycling service starts today (September 6) and will see 60,000 households in switch to new recycling collections over the course of this week.

New recycling boxes and wheeled bins are being delivered to all 60,000 households. One recycling box will allow residents to recycle paper, plastic bottles, food tins and drinks cans, aerosols and mixed textiles, shoes and clothing; a second box will take foil, mixed glass and cardboard; a third bin will take food waste.

All these recyclables will be collected on a weekly basis. Residual waste collections will move to once a fortnight if the household has been identified to receive a wheelie bin, with seagull proof sacks collected weekly, reflecting the fact that less of this waste will be produced as more material is recycled.

The new service aims to see at least 50 per cent of all Torbay’s household waste recycled by 2012, with kerbside recycling rates increased to 45 per cent (from 35 per cent) in the first year of operation.

“The new recycling and waste services are a fundamental change for Torbay but a very positive one. This allows Torbay Council to avoid fines and landfill taxes of up to £14 million a year – a significant sum of council tax payers money which would essentially be wasted without the introduction of this recycling service,” states TOR2 Director Alistair Campbell.

“We aim to preserve the best parts of the old recycling and waste service, such as assisted collections for all disabled and infirm residents, while combining this with the convenience of a kerbside recycling service for all residents.”

In most jobs if you mess up you have to suffer the consequences. What are the chances of reduced council tax next term???

Have one set of recycle boxes between 3 flats! still waiting for extra boxes.
Have had boxes out all day, no sign of collection lorry, no calender so put boxes out tuesday as normal, and then again today because neighbours had their`s out.
surely some over paid council executive responsible for this total mess should now be seeking different employment, perhaps as a refuse collector!

Typical that the new waste collection company Tor2 has no direct complaints e-mail, especially as the majority of Torbay residents forewarned of the failure of this venture to fulfil its side of the service it is supposed to provide, and for one which we have already paid!

First days collection and no surprise to see that Tor2 have failed to collect from a huge number of property's in Paignton, despite everyone recycling into the correct bins (unpaid labour)? as requested, or should that be demanded by Tor2 and the inept Torbay council.

As I have already paid for the collection of my waste via the disproportionate council tax I naturally expected Tor2 to collect my waste at the agreed time, and usual collection point, after all we do live in hope that our council will get something right eventually!
I do not require a visit from one of their service managers to discuss the issue of non collection, after all it is they who have failed to carry out their legal obligation to the residents of Torbay, and therefore, they should not be afforded the opportunity to talk their way out of their incapability and failure to carry out their contractual duties.

Have written about this debacle before and now after a holiday in the sun I'm brought back down to earth to find my shiny new black boxes with attached stickers?

Surely the two large black boxes should have been different colours?

No doubt in a few weeks the rain will have washed off the stickers and our recycling won't even get collected :-(
