A woman aged 28 has died after being struck by a train in the Westcountry.

Paramedics were called to railway tracks close to Newton Abbot station on Thursday and found the woman badly-injured but still breathing.

The woman was discovered still underneath the First Great Western 9.22pm service from Exeter Central to Paignton.

She was taken to hospital in Torbay but died from her injuries in the early hours of yesterday.

Police yesterday identified the deceased as a local woman and her family were being informed.

Officers said they were not treating the death as suspicious.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) and Devon and Cornwall Police attended the scene on Thursday after they received a report at 10.19pm.

A BTP spokesman said: "Local paramedics also attended and located the woman, who was still breathing but had suffered severe head injuries, underneath the train."

The spokesman added: "Medics worked on the woman at the scene before taking her by ambulance to Torbay Hospital, where she died in the early hours of Friday."
