Torbay back on flood alert

TORBAY – along with many parts of Devon – is back on flood alert this evening. The Met Office has issued an amber warning for the South West region, while the Environment Agency has put nine flood warnings and 48 flood alerts in place in specific areas. The heavy rain – which has been forecast for some days – was confirmed by the Met Office earlier today. It says the rain is expected this evening and overnight before clearing on Wednesday morning.

The Met Office website says that "Given saturated ground, the public should be prepared for further localised flooding and disruption to travel, particularly in parts of Devon".

Meanwhile the Environment Agency has put nine flood warnings in place for South West England. In particular, there is concern that flooding could affect the Exeter to London Paddington railway line.

In addition, 48 flood alerts are in place. These include an alert for the River Dart area, including Torbay, Totnes, Ashburton, Buckfastleigh and Dartmouth areas.

Saturated ground

The agency says, "Rivers remain high and the ground is saturated. Further rain is expected which will persist throughout Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. Rainfall totals of up to 50mm could be reached on high ground and the moors. River levels are expected to rise in response to the forecast rainfall."

The agency warns to prepare for possible flooding, saying that roads and transport networks may also be disrupted or effected. It recommends checking weather reports and local news before making journeys.
