ALTHOUGH THE RAIN is easing this evening, there are still 37 flood warnings in place across the South West region and the police are advising the public not to travel unless absolutely necessary. A number of roads have been closed by flooding and fallen trees, while rail links to London and Bristol have also been affected…

It was a grim picture today across much of the South West as the severe weather and high winds continued to cause havoc. A part of Plymouth city centre had to be cordoned off because of tiles falling off a building, while the ceremony to mark the Christmas lights switch-on – due to take place this evening – had to be cancelled. A similar Christmas lights ceremony in Exeter has also been postponed.

Rail services have been extremely disrupted, due to the main line being flooded between Exeter and Taunton. Buses are replacing services between Taunton and Exeter, and Bristol and Plymouth.

At one stage the Tamar Bridge was also closed to high-sided vehicles.
