POLICE HAVE arrested two men in Torquay this afternoon (Thursday 3 January) under the Terrorism Act. The two men - a 20-year-old man and an 18-year-old man, both from Torquay - were initially detained on suspicion of committing criminal damage, but later rearrested under the Terrorism Act. They are currently in custody...

Police were first called to Lymington Road in Torquay this morning, following reports of a suspicious package in the vicinity of the coach station. Police then closed off parts of Lymington Road, Parkfield Road and Forest Road. Motorists were advised to avoid the area. A small number of properties were evacuated at this time.

Police spent much of the day searching an address in Lymington Road, which required the evacuation of a small number of neighbouring properties. Bomb disposal experts were at the scene.

The road cordons have now been removed, although police remain at the property

The two men - arrested  under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act ( the preparation of a terrorist act) - remain in police custody at this time.

The police would like to thank local people for their patience and help throughout the day.
