PICTURES: Paignton stream becomes a torrent!

PAIGNTON'S low-lying Clennon Valley was hit by flooding as torrential rain swept across the town.

Resident Peter Thorne took photographs as the quiet streams into the valley were transformed by the sheer volume of water.

Mr thorne said: "I have lived nearby for many years and have seen flooding like this before but it has never been so intense.

"Most of the water was running down along the vehicle access trackway and pouring down toward the pumping station. At the time, there must have been thousands of tons of water draining off the wildlife ponds.The council vehicle could not drive along the track and had to quickly reverse back.

"The natural water run-off from the nearby fields was not very much, but the little stream in the zoo woods was like a torrential river!

"The source comes via the Westerland valley, alongside Kings Ash road.

"Although we have had a lot of rain in recent days, I believe the main cause for this kind of flooding, is too much concrete developments in recent years especially when the weather becomes extremely wet."
