Another "park for a pound" offer will run in various Paignton car parks on four Saturdays in February.

The council has laid on similar successful schemes in recent years, and now it is implementing a new parking offer every Saturday in February between noon and midnight in town centre car parks across the Bay.

Cllr Robert Excell said: "Despite the considerable budget pressures the council is facing at the moment, we do recognise the importance of doing what we can to help local traders and those involved in the Bay's night-time economy.

"I am sure this park for a pound offer on the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of February will be welcomed by motorists and by businesses at this quiet time of the year.

"It means shoppers can spend much longer periods of time in the town centres without the worry of having to return to their vehicles, and they can also enjoy a meal in the evening on the purchase of the same ticket.

"The ticket will also be transferable to any Torbay Council car park except The Harbour pay on foot car park, so for example people could go shopping and then move their car to another car park to enjoy our beaches and seafront facilities without having to purchase another ticket.

"Torbay Town Centres Company is fully behind this and will market the promotion. If it is successful, with good feedback from the public and traders, the council may consider extending the promotion through March."

Ian Broadfoot, Chief Executive of Torbay Town Centres Company, said: "It is very welcome that the council will be providing support to the town centres throughout Torbay with this parking promotion.

"This is traditionally a quiet time of year and hopefully this initiative will bring in more customers to the town centres, increase trade and if successful can be extended into March"

The car parks where the £1 offer will apply are:

Torquay: Chilcote Close, Hampton Avenue, St Marychurch, Princes Street, Meadfoot Road, Beacon Quay, Lower Union Lane, Union Square, The Harbour, Brunswick, Town Hall.

Paignton: Preston Gardens, Churchward Road, Crown and Anchor, Victoria, Great Western, Station Lane.

Brixham: Brixham Central, Oxen Cove/Freshwater.
