PAIGNTON LOVES HALLOWEEN! It's a chance for everyone to dress up, release their inner monster, and have some spooky fun..!
This year, Halloween coincides with half term, so there are plenty of fun events and activities to keep your little horrors amused. Why not follow Occombe Farm's Halloween Bewitched Trail? Solve the clues hidden in the woods, and you could win a prize! And on Friday 2 November, they're offering a Halloween Sweet Making Workshop, where you can make your own toffee apples, sugar mice and freaky fudge to fill your trick or treat bag!
For a great day out, you can't beat a trip to Woodlands Leisure Park for Devon's Greatest Halloscream – attractions on offer include the Flying Spooks Ride, the Ghoulish Ghost Train, the Vampire's Castle and the Gruesome Graveyard. On Thursday, there's a Spooky Rockpool Ramble at The Seashore Centre, when you can discover the gruesome creatures lurking in the water, and make Halloween decorations. Animal lovers will also enjoy Pennywell Zoo's Jollyween event, with pumpkin carving, mask making, apple bobbing and lots more to do, as well as the chance to meet the animals. And at Babbacombe Model Village, you can enjoy a spooky evening at their Halloween of Mini Horrors, with creepy illuminations, fire and sound effects, and live actors in the gardens - meet them if you dare!
Meanwhile for the grownups, how about a spooky walk around Brixham with The Original Brixham Ghostwalk? They promise you'll be spellbound by its rich history, crammed with ghostly tales, spooky stories and paranormal activity.
Or perhaps you're planning a Halloween party? If so, you'll need to get the decor right, with atmospheric lighting and suitably spooky decor. Check out It's Party Time on Hyde Road for affordable decorations to set the scene as well as a range of costumes. sea_cider says it's 'a fun shop with a range of party gear, masks and novelty items in shop. The ideal place if you're looking for that costume for a themed event.'
You'll also need a nice big pumpkin for your jack-o-lantern... and remember to keep the flesh to make pumpkin soup for your guests! You'll find pumpkins at greengrocers around the town – while you're there, pick up some apples for the traditional apple bobbing. MajaCurtis recommends Salad Bowl in Preston for 'a good selection of fruit and vegetables at low prices'. Other traditional Halloween treats include toffee apples and cinder toffee – make your own (a great activity for keeping the kids busy) or check out the local stores. While you're shopping, don't forget to pick up some mini sweet packs or bars for any trick-or-treaters who call... or you may live to regret it! peri_peri recommends Devon Confectionery in Parkside Road as 'a great store'.
And finally, you'll need to look the part – head to Mainline Fancy Dress on Torbay Road for a fantastic choice of creepy clothing, masks, wigs and face paints, plus false nails, fangs and some great novelties. Devon_Girl says it's a 'Fantastic, large, fancy dress store which has everything you could possibly need for your fancy dress occasion'. If you're on a budget, many of the local charity shops put out Halloween gear at this time of year, too.
Happy Halloween everyone – have a devilishly good time!
