Council receives keys for multi-million pound Parkfield project in Paignton: The impressive BMX track at Parkfield.
Parkfield's new building was handed over to the council earlier today.
The contractors Interserve have finished the practical completion of the site and have given the council the keys to the new build.
The building with its signature wave roofline is an integral part of the multi-million pound Parkfield project, which will offer a range of world-class facilities to young people.
Interserve has been on site since September 2010 and will complete all internal and external works by the first week in October 2011. All the facilities will then be open to the public, including the BMX track, a skate park, climbing walls, a media suite, a sports hall/theatre and a cafe.
Once Parkfield is open, visitors won't have long to wait to enjoy the attraction's first big event. On Saturday, October 8 more than 300 riders from across the country are expected to head to Parkfield for the BMX regional Open Event.
Cllr Chris Lewis, said: "The handing over of the keys is a welcome milestone in the development of Parkfield. In just over a month's time young people in Torbay and from further afield will finally be able to enjoy the fantastic facilities which are currently being completed.
"This month is going to be very busy - as well as staff training and the hand over period between the contractors and the council, there will also be a series of open evenings so schools and community groups can take a sneak preview of Parkfield.
"We hope this will encourage as many young people as possible to come along and enjoy Parkfield and all that it has to offer when it is open."
The council was awarded more than £4.8 million from the government funded Myplace programme, delivered by the Big Lottery Fund, to develop the Parkfield site.
